Initiative determines who acts first during a melee round. Winning initiative determines if the character gets to act or react in melee. Each person in melee rolls their initiative and the character with the highest value acts first, the next highest value acts second and so on until the order of all characters is determined.
Formula: 1d10 + [Skill Level in melee weapon] + [Weapon Speed] + [Modifiers].
| Initiative Weapon Speed | |
|---|---|
| Large | -2 |
| Medium | n/a |
| Small | +2 |
| Initiative Miscellaneous Modifiers | |
|---|---|
| Surprised Character has been caught completely unaware | -8 |
| Flat Footed Character is indecisive or confused | -5 |
| Unsure Footing Ice, slick ground, uneven terrain, broken ground | -3 |
| Attacking Down Character is above the opponent (on horseback) | +5 |
The calculation for initiative spell casters is the same as described above excepting that the weapon speed is zero.
